Ariz. Bill Funds Stadium with Car Rental Tax
A bill to use a Cactus League ticket surcharge and car rental tax to help fund the $84 million Chicago Cubs spring training stadium in Mesa has been introduced at the Arizona Legislature.
A bill to use a Cactus League ticket surcharge and car rental tax to help fund the $84 million Chicago Cubs spring training stadium in Mesa has been introduced at the Arizona Legislature, the Phoenix Business Journal reports.
House Bill 2737, introduced by House Majority Leader John McComish, does not specify levy amounts.
The Arizona Diamondbacks, Chicago White Sox and some other league members oppose the surcharge, which would assessed on all Cactus League tickets. However, Mesa Mayor Scott Smith says the Cubs are the biggest draw in all of spring training baseball, and Cubs owners have threatened to move to Florida unless a new stadium is built.
The city of Mesa also will ask voters to approve bonds and new spending on the Cubs project, according to the Phoenix Business Journal.
