A gun left in a rental car led police in Layton, Utah, to a cache of stolen weapons and property on Aug. 25, according to The Salt Lake Tribune.
The investigation began on Aug. 22 after car rental employees found the gun in the vehicle and called police, Layton police Sgt. Shawn Horton told the newspaper. Officers discovered the gun was stolen and traced it to a 31-year-old friend of the woman who had rented the car.
Police searched the man's home and found eight guns, including one that appeared to be a .22 lever-action rifle given to Division of Wildlife Services employees as a retirement gift.
Police also found rifle and handgun ammunition, as well as other stolen property, including a boat motor, power tools and a power washer.
The man was arrested Aug. 24 on theft and weapons possession charges.
