Vermont Halts City's Car Rental Tax

The lawsuit alleges the company Hertz hired to redesign its websites and mobile apps missed several key deadlines and did not meet conditions laid out it its contract.
While five vehicles were recovered, eight are still missing.
House Bill 102, dubbed the "Vehicle Rental Modernization Act," would generate additional revenue for the state's general fund.
So far, 21 people have been charged with misdemeanor criminal trespassing and one person has been charged with felony identity theft.
According to the complaint, the overcharging began in 2015 when E-Z and Advantage merged.
The $39,500 settlement includes provisions that requires Executive to stop collecting security deposits and ensure that customers can complete a walk around of the vehicle to check for any pre-existing damages prior to leaving the lot.
While the number of recalls increased to 914 in 2018 as compared to 810 in 2017, the number of affected vehicles fell to 29.3 million as compared with 30.6 million in 2017, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data.
The coalition includes American Car Rental Association members like Enterprise and Hertz, as well as cities, airports, the Arizona Lodging and Tourism Association, and the Cactus League.

The money was earned as incentive compensation which was tied to an accounting scandal five years ago.
The state is expected to generate about $2.8 million a year from the tax.
The fee will fund renovations to Upstate New York transit. However, the legislation does not address last year's FAA reauthorization, which includes an amendment that ensures taxes imposed at airports be levied only for airport purposes.
