Wholesale Vehicle Prices Up 6% Month-Over-Month

Wholesale used vehicle prices in March averaged $10,815 — up 6% compared to February and up 1.7% relative to March 2015. Car prices continue to show year-over-year declines while prices for pickups and SUVs/crossovers show gains.


Wholesale Price Decline Continues in March

Wholesale used vehicle prices declined for the third consecutive month, a decrease of 1.6% from a year ago, according to the Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index. Rental risk units had the lowest average mileage since September 2014.


Cars, Minivans Continue Downward Price Trend

Wholesale used vehicle prices in February averaged $10,202 — down 0.5% compared to January but up a modest 0.3% relative to February 2015, according to ADESA's monthly analysis. Cars and minivans continue to show year-over-year declines while SUVs/crossovers and pickups show gains.

Prices for rental risk units were down 4.1% from a year ago, the lowest February level in three years. The Manheim Index for February finished at 123.3, a decline of 1.4% from a year ago.


Truck Prices Keep Used Vehicle Prices Up in January

In January, average wholesale used vehicle prices were up 0.6% year-over-year and up 4.9% month-over-month, according to ADESA. Truck prices were up 10.5% while car and crossover prices fell year-over-year.


Pickups Remain Strongest Vehicle Segment at Auction

Pickups, both midsize and full-size, remain the strongest segment at auction, while compact cars continue to underperform with a year-over-year decline of almost 9%.

In December, average wholesale used vehicle prices were down 1% year-over-year and down 1.2% month-over-month, according to ADESA. The minivan was the only model class segment to show a significant month-over-month increase.

At 44,375 miles, average mileage in December was down from November and below its year-ago level. The Manheim Used Vehicle Index was up 1.5% from a year ago.


November Used Vehicle Prices Continue Upward Trend

Average wholesale used vehicle prices were up 1.1% month-over-month in November — largely driven by truck prices as in previous months, according to ADESA.
