Shapiro Elected ACTIF President

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The Association for Car and Truck Rental Independents and Franchisees (ACTIF) Board of Directors has elected Jim Shapiro president. Shapiro, owner and operator of Americar and Payless operations in Central Florida, has been in the car rental industry for 20 years.

In addition, Shapiro received two industry honors last week at the Car Rental Show held in Las Vegas: Auto Rental News' Executive of the Year Award and ACTIF's President's Award.

Shapiro acknowledged that his new responsibilities as ACTIF president will pose some difficult challenges, in light of the current economic and political climate.

"The impact of the horrific terrorist attack of Sept. 11, 2001, compounded by the falloff in the economy over the past year, has had a tremendous adverse impact on rental car operations," he said. "Many could have reacted and adjusted to the economic slowdown in logical fashion. The instantaneous impact of the terrorist attacks has required very aggressive reaction and adjustment. We must continue to act smartly until economic recovery occurs."
