California Triples Vehicle Registration Fee

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- In response to the state's $38 billion budget shortfall, Governor Gray Davis and his administration have tripled the state vehicle registration fee without a legislative vote. The fee hike is set to go into effect in October.

However, state Republican leaders have vowed to challenge the fee increase in court and to accelerate efforts to recall Davis in a special election.
