According to results released June 13 from San Mateo County’s June 5 election, with all precincts reporting and all mail-in ballots counted, Measure T passed with 50.09% of voters approving the 2.5% tax on gross receipts of car rental businesses in unincorporated areas of the county, including the San Francisco International Airport.

The vote difference was less than 200 votes, with mail-in ballots and early voting counts tipping the scaled to “yes.”

The other two travel-related tax measures that were on San Mateo County residents’ ballot did not pass. You can read more about the taxes here.

The official results will be released after the county counts a sampling of the votes by hand, as required by California law. According to a San Mateo County press release, the elections board expects to be done with the “One Percent Manual Tally” no later than July 3.

As you can watch in the video above by ABC15.com, San Francisco has some of the highest excise tax rates on the rental car industry, with more than half of what customers spend on a rental contract goes to fees and taxes.
