San Diego Airport Opens Rental Car Center

The west entrance for customers to go to the ready and return area, which accommodates parking of 5,400 rental cars.

Currently, there are 14 car rental brands operating at the facility. There is room for up to 19 brands.

The facility's 15 car wash bays are available to all the car rental brands.

The center contains 72 fueling stations for all the car rental brands to use. There are 75,000 gallons of fuel stored in underground tanks.

Created by Amy Landesberg, the Swarm artwork is comprised of 801 taillights from Hyundai Elantra cars.

The rental car center will have 16 buses transporting customers between the facility and the airport terminals.

Created by artist Christian Moeller, MetroGnomes stand 54 feet tall and are made of steel, aluminum and electromagnets.

The $316-million rental car facility features four levels. The center is about 1,400 feet long — equivalent to four football fields.

The customer service building features counters for major car rental brands such as Avis, Budget, Alamo, National, Enterprise and Dollar Thrifty.

This section of the customer service area features several independent car rental brands including Fox Rent A Car, MCar, Advantage Rent A Car, E-Z Rent-A-Car and Payless Car Rental.

The facility features screens with flight arrivals and departures times. 

Level one of the ready and return area contains cars for Hertz, Dollar and Thrifty brands.

The east entrance to the ready and return area features another art piece. Artist Amy Landesberg's the Hive is comprised of 2,200 sideview mirrors from Ford F-150 trucks.
