Mileage Stays High on Rental Resale Vehicles in January

Wholesale used vehicle prices increased in January and pushed the Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index to a reading of 125.3, an increase of 2.5% from a year ago. Additionally, rental resale vehicles remained at the record high mileage level posted in December.

As consumer demand for used cars and trucks remained strong, wholesale used vehicle values increased in the fourth quarter and ended the year at 123.9, a 1.8% increase from a year ago and 2.1% higher than the third quarter, according to the Manheim Used Vehicle Index.

Low Gas Prices Contribute to Strong SUV, Luxury Vehicle Prices

According to ADESA Analytical Services’ monthly analysis of Wholesale Used Vehicle Prices by Vehicle Model Class, wholesale used vehicle prices in November averaged $9,862 — up 1.8% compared to October and up 1.1% relative to November 2013. Additionally, SUVs and luxury cars had strong month-over-month gains.

In August, wholesale used vehicle prices (on a mix-, mileage- and seasonally adjusted basis) declined 0.7%, the fourth consecutive monthly decline, according to Manheim Consulting. ADESA also saw a decrease in wholesale used vehicle prices — down 0.4% compared to August 2013.
