Last month, independent group SeaTac Committee for Good Jobs filed a City of SeaTac petition to enact a minimum wage of $15 an hour for all employees in the hospitality and transportation industries in SeaTac. Other proposed initiatives include more full-time work opportunities, paid sick and safe time and 100% of service charges or tips given to workers who performed the services.
Entitled “Setting Minimum Employment Standards for Hospitality and Transportation Workers,” the Committee needed to gather at least 1,541 signatures from SeaTac voters, according to the City of SeaTac. And it has successfully completed this task.
Now that the Committee has collected enough signatures, “… the City Council will have to take action either adopting the proposed Initiative as written or submit the measure to the SeaTac voters for approval,” says the City of SeaTac, the boundaries of which encompass the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
The proposal covers SeaTac Airport businesses, including airport baggage handling, passenger services, security, aircraft fueling, retail stories, hotels and rental car facilities.
If the initiative is endorsed by SeaTac voters, the effective date is Jan 1, 2014.
