Virginia-based Evatran announced yesterday that it has logged over 1,500 hours of charging time on its Plugless L2 wireless charging systems. Installed across the country through its Apollo Trial Program that started in 2012, the program follows participants — such as Hertz — as they use the wireless charging system on their own Chevrolet Volts and Nissan LEAF electric vehicles. Plugless Power streamlines the charging of EVs by eliminating the cord and the plug, says Evatran.

With the final installations slated for mid-August, over 15 Plugless installations are now complete. According to Evatran, the company enlisted high-profile commercial partners to drive nationwide electric vehicle adoption through public awareness of the benefits of wireless charging.

From car rental agencies to corporate campuses to utility providers, the first participants included Google, Hertz Rent-a-Car and Clemson University with installations in spring 2012. The second phase of the program, which kicked off in May 2013, included new installations at the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, DTE Energy and Argonne Laboratories. The last of the Apollo Program units will be installed next month at UC Davis and the City of Sacramento.

Reservations for the Plugless Level 2 EV Charging System opened in June at www.pluglesspower.com, with the first shipments to individual EV owners expected in August. Although the system is currently only available for LEAF and Volt models, Evatran says it is working to bring the technology to other EV models in the future.
