For this holiday season, Hawaii appears to have some of the highest car rental rates, according to a new survey from CheapCarRental.net. Kahului (Maui), Lihue (Kauai) and Honolulu are in the top four U.S. destinations with the highest car rental rates.

The survey examined the car rental rates of 30 popular U.S. destinations over the holiday period from Dec. 23 to Dec. 27.

In Honolulu, renters will have to spend $127 per rental day for the most affordable car. That represents an increase of 116% compared to regular rates, says the survey.

In Kahului — on the island of Maui — holiday car renters will spend $339 per rental day, making it the most expensive location in the United States. Only slightly cheaper are rates in Lihue, Kauai, at $272 daily. In comparison to regular rates, car renters will be paying in excess of 400% more in both destinations, according to the survey.

Among the non-Hawaiian destinations, New York City is most expensive ($120), followed by Philadelphia ($107) and West Palm Beach ($105).

The following table displays the 10 destinations with the highest car rental rates — along with a comparison to regular prices.
