At the end of May, car2go ceased its car-sharing operations in London and Birmingham, according to a report by Reuters. The company had been operating in London since December 2012 and expanded to Birmingham in 2013.

“The unique challenges we encountered were more significant than expected,” car2go said on its website. “We’ve listened to customer feedback and taking the U.K.’s strong culture and tradition of private vehicle ownership into account, we have decided to withdraw from the U.K. marketplace.”

Car2go was unable to gain more than 10,000 customers and couldn’t achieve the five to eight daily bookings needed to make the business viable in the U.K., a car2go spokesman told Reuters.

Currently, car2go is available in 25 cities worldwide, including 12 cities across Europe.
