As part of a trial program to encourage carsharing options, Wellington City Council has set aside more city car parking spaces for carsharing vehicles, according to a report by New Zealand’s Voxy.

The trial program is planned to continue through mid-2016. The carsharing parking spots will be made available to carsharing companies at no charge, says the report.

"Carshare operations are on a modest scale in Wellington but experience elsewhere like in the UK, United States, and Australia shows they can quickly become popular with the right exposure and a change in culture,” Deputy Mayor Justin Lester told Voxy. “Research has also shown that every carshare vehicle removes 10 cars off the road, as people are more inclined to plan their trip carefully or share the car when they’re paying per hour.”

Cityhop, Roam and YourDrive are the three carsharing companies involved in Wellington’s carsharing trial program, says the report.
