Montreal is expanding the presence of carsharing in the city with more permits and pick-up and drop-off areas, according to the Montreal Gazette.

car2go and Communauto's Auto-Mobile purchased permits that allow carsharing operations in 10 boroughs across Montreal, most notably downtown. The move is part of Montreal's effort to diversify transportation and reduce personal car use.

Previously, only electric carsharing vehicles were allowed to operate in Downtown Montreal, with only 85 vehicles able to service the area. The expansion allows both companies to utilize the 1,050 carsharing vehicles in the city.

The city is also considering cutting the cost of electric car permits to encourage electric vehicle use.
