Airlines across the U.S. are preparing to voluntarily suspend all domestic flights due to the continuing spread of COVID-19, according to multiple reports.

The federal government has also been considering a similar move, although neither the White House nor the airlines have made final decisions. U.S. airlines have already stopped the majority of international flights and cut domestic flight scheduled by 40%.

As much of the U.S. is under mandatory stay-at-home orders, airlines have already seen a drastic decline in full flights.

According to industry insiders, airlines would prefer a government ordered suspension, as it would give them more leverage in bailout talks.
