OLYMPIA, Wash. -- State legislators here have tabled two bills calling for the rental industry to implement an electronic system for verifying customer driver's licenses.

Bill supporters argued that some crimes are often committed by people renting cars with false licenses, and that a license verification system would help prevent such crimes.

The bills (SB 5978 and HB 2042) specified that the state would assume no portion of the system's cost. Details would be worked out between rent-a-car industry representatives and the Washington State Patrol and Department of Licensing.

The bills could be reintroduced at a future session.
