CONCORD, N.H. -- The New Hampshire Senate this month approved a $9 billion budget plan, but scrapped a proposed $2 per-day tax on rental cars.

The rental car tax had been proposed to fund the Land and Community Heritage Investment Program, a conservation project. The rental tax amendment was defeated by a vote of 18 to 5.

A conference committee is now working to develop a compromise between the separate budgets passed by the Senate and the House.
