TORONTO -- The World Health Organization last Wednesday removed Toronto from the list of places affected by SARS, triggering hopes that the local travel industry will rebound soon. The decision marked the second time Toronto has been taken off the list.

Toronto city leaders and health officials assured local residents that they would remain vigilant in taking anti-SARS measures to prevent another return to the list.

The World Health Organization announced yesterday that the SARS outbreak has been contained worldwide. However, it's not known whether SARS has seasonal cycles. Researchers are working to create a simple and reliable test to identify the disease in its early stages.

Meanwhile, Hertz has opted to do its part to help jumpstart tourism in Toronto. The company has begun offering a special package for customers renting in the greater Toronto area. Hertz's Freedom Ticket Package is available through August 31.

With a savings of more than CN$280, Hertz's Freedom Ticket Package features complimentary admission to popular attractions throughout the greater metropolitan Toronto and Niagara region, including the CN Tower and the Toronto Zoo. In addition, the ticket includes a complimentary helicopter tour of Niagara Falls and a one-hour play pass for Dave and Busters' World Entertainment Cafe.

Geno Diraddo, director of sales and marketing for Hertz in Canada, said: "Coupled with great Hertz rates and customer services, the Freedom Ticket promotion enables value-conscious leisure travelers to maximize their dollars while on holiday."

This offer is not valid on insurance replacement and dealer replacement rentals.
