DEARBORN, Mich. -- Hertz reported a second-quarter pre-tax profit of $153 million, a $9 million improvement from the $144 million pre-tax profit from the same period in 2004.

The improvement resulted from higher car and equipment rental volumes and higher proceeds from the disposal of used vehicles and equipment. A highly competitive pricing environment partially offset the gains.

Net income in the second quarter for Hertz was $97 million, up from $94 million in the same period last year.
