ATLANTA --- Delta Air Lines Inc., the nation’s third-largest airline, is now operating under Chapter 11 protection after $10 billion in losses since 2001 and little in available cash reserves, according to the Dallas Business Journal.

Delta is third of the large airlines to file for bankruptcy in recent years, after United Air Lines Inc. fell into the red in 2002 and US Airways Group Inc. did the same in August 2005.

Though the recent turn of events has meant a huge cut in jobs for Delta employees, airport officials at Delta hubs such as Cincinnati are counting on travel to remain steady, the Kentucky Post reported.

Delta did "de-hub" from the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.

Airport and government officials in the metropolitan Atlanta area, where Delta is headquartered, are scrambling to save jobs and aid the airline, which has been a large contributor to the Atlanta economy, the Business Journal reported
