Citing “significant financial challenges” because of a slump in travel, the credit crunch, and problems selling used cars, Avis Budget Group Inc. said Tuesday it is laying off all 220 workers at its call center in Fredericton, New Brunswick, according to the New Brunswick Business Journal.

About 130 workers will be laid off by mid-December from the Fredericton call center, which fields inbound calls related to car rentals. The remaining 90 employees will stay on until the end of June, as Avis is consolidating its contact centers to Tulsa, Okla.

The company is offering employees severance, benefits, training, and outplacement support, a company spokeswoman said.
