Rental Car Tax to Help Pay for Proposed Stadium in Minnesota

A tax on rental cars would provide some of the funding toward a proposed $791 million multipurpose stadium, which would replace the Metrodome in Minnesota, according to Bloomberg.

Rep. Loren Solberg is the author of the legislation, which includes a rental car tax that would generate $5.5 million.

The plan also includes a 1.5 percent surcharge on area hotels that would raise an estimated $8 million annually; a 6.875 percent surcharge on jersey purchases that would raise $16.9 million; and a sports-themed scratch-off game that would raise $5.5 million; The total amounts to $35.9 million.

The Minnesota Vikings would pay $264 million for construction costs. The remaining $527 million would be financed over 40 years with surtaxes and lottery-type games that would raise the $31.9 million needed for debt financing.

Solberg was quoted in the article as saying he wants the bill to be paid for without adding to the deficit or taking money from entities such as nursing homes, schools, roads, or hospitals.
