According to the Brisbane Times, three Japanese travelers reported that their rental car’s GPS routed them into Moreton Bay in an attempt to drive to a nearby island, North Stradbroke.

As the vehicle drove out into the bay at about 11 a.m., the mud pulled the vehicle in further, and by 3 p.m. the vehicle was stranded in two meters of water as the tide rose. The travelers said that the GPS navigated them to the bay and that it kept saying it would take them to a road.

The article reports that the car was covered by insurance, but will cost the tourists about $1,500 in excess charges.
