U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) today sent letters to the four leading rental car companies — Hertz, Enterprise, Avis Budget Group and Dollar Thrifty — asking them to commit to the following pledge: “Effective immediately, our company is making a permanent commitment to not rent out or sell any vehicles under safety recall until the defect has been remedied.”

The letters ask that the companies reply to Boxer and to make correspondence with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) within 30 days of the letter, and that after the deadline she will publicize which companies signed the pledge. According to Boxer’s release about the pledge, Hertz has already given its correspondence to NHTSA.

Boxer is a co-sponsor of Senate Bill 1445, the Raechel and Jacqueline Houck Safe Rental Car Act.
