According to a customer service survey of about 100,000 customers of Australian car rental comparison site CarRental.com.au, its customers reported that they are confused by the ways they are charged after receiving the bill for their car rental.

More than 20% reported they did not understand certain fees including toll notices with fines applied by the toll road operators and post-pickup charges for what they call "non-existent damages." Another 25% said they were charged between $10 and $3,000 in “hidden fees.”

According to the general manager of CarRental.com.au, Nathan Joyce, customers should always review their billing statements after returning a vehicle. He also said to be sure to ask about tolls and insurance during the booking process.
