A proposal to raise the County Supplemental Auto Rental Excise Tax was introduced to the Marion County City Council in Indiana on Jan. 7. If approved, the local tax on car rentals would jump from 4% to 6%.

According to the Indianapolis Business Journal (IBJ), Marion Country car rental customers would pay 17% in taxes overall for a car rental. Customers currently pay 15% with a 4% state rental tax, 7% state sales tax and 4% local rental tax.

IBJ also said that car rental companies disapprove of the tax since it will hurt local residents on top of visitors.

A council spokesperson said that a vote on the proposal is expected by the end of January.
