Lawmakers are proposing to raise Hawaii’s daily car rental tax again to help fund more highway construction projects. Last year, the daily rental car fee was increased from $3 to $5 per day.
The proposed legislation was approved by voters earlier this year.
The tax will add 0.5% on the current 9% sales tax on car rentals.
The amendment ensures that taxes and fees generated at federally-funded airports are reinvested in airport-related projects.
The rental companies contend that the car rental fee does not benefit its customers, as the revenue generated from the fee will fund a parking structure at the Chula Vista Bayfront development project, which is 10 miles from the airport.
