I.D. Systems’ wireless in-vehicle management system permits two-way data communications between a vehicle and various car rental operating systems.
Avis Budget Group will have more than 100,000 connected cars globally this year and has committed to operating a fully connected global fleet by 2020.
Connected Toyota vehicles are expected to be available in September as 2019 vehicle models are introduced into the fleet.
The Avis Car Rental mobile app interacts with connected cars, allowing renters to manage their entire rental experience from their smartphone.
The patented system — used by Avis Budget Group — lets renters reserve a vehicle online or using a smartphone and confirm its availability in real time through a wireless device inside the vehicle. Renters can also unlock a vehicle with a remote authorization signal and return the vehicle without assistance from an associate.
In an agreement Aug. 22 between Avis Budget and I.D. Systems, a wireless program will allow the car rental company to offer smartphone technology and hour-to-hour rentals to its corporate clients without lot staff.
