Bill Proposing Car Rental Tax for Ballpark Advances
The tax, which would fund Chicago Cubs Cactus League park, is opposed by several Cactus League teams and other organizations.
An Arizona state bill calling for a $1 increase on car rental taxes in Maricopa County to help pay for a new Cactus League ballpark for the Chicago Cubs in Mesa is moving forward in the state legislature, according to the Phoenix Business Journal.
The House Commerce Committee on Feb. 17 voted to move House Bill 2736 forward. In addition to the increase on car rental taxes, the bill calls for an 8 percent ticket surcharge on all spring training baseball games to help fund the $84 million stadium.
The taxes initially would fund the Cubs stadium, but they could be used to help finance other Cactus League ballparks, Mesa Mayor Scott Smith said.
The Arizona Diamondbacks and other Cactus League teams oppose fees on their tickets to pay for the stadium.
The proposed state fees would account for as much as two-thirds of the price for the Cubs’ park. The city of Mesa also will ask its voters to approve bonds and extra spending for the Cubs complex.
