Florida House Speaker Expects Rental-Car Surcharge to Receive ‘Chilly Reception’
A $2 charge on rental cars is being pushed by Orange County, Fla. Mayor Teresa Jacobs in a effort to help fund road, rail, and transit needs.
Orange County, Fla. lawmakers created a wish list for the legislative session that starts March 8, but a $2 rental-car surcharge on the list isn't expected to get a pleasant response from lawmakers, according to House Speaker Dean Cannon.
"Any bill that seeks to increase taxes at the state or local level will find a chilly reception in the Florida House," Cannon said in a statement.
Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs pushed to include the $2 charge among the county's list of wants, which also includes priorities such as protecting state transportation funding, and opposing efforts to expand jail time inmates would spend in county facilities. Jacobs and other Orange leaders want to use the potential $30 million to $35 million revenue that a rental-car surcharge could bring in to help fund road, rail or transit needs.
