ORLANDO -- The Auto Club's overall travel bookings increased by more than 3% in October over the same period last year, according to the monthly AAA National Travel Barometer. The largest increase was in car rental reservations, which jumped 18% over October 2002 levels.

The increase in car rentals, the biggest jump since February, goes hand-in-hand with more Americans opting to take driving vacations, AAA said.

The AAA National Travel Barometer is based on a sample of 13 clubs representing more than half of the association's 46 million members. It is intended to help gauge the strength of the leisure travel market.
