car2go launched in London — its 17th city — making available 500 smart fortwo vehicles for three boroughs including Islington, Sutton and Newham, the company announced  on Dec. 4.

The Surrey Comet reported that some residents are complaining of parking issues since the vehicles are taking up parking spaces in their neighborhoods. But the street parking is part of car2go’s agreement when moving in to a new city.

Registration for car2go will be free until Dec. 31 and all new customers will be credited 30 minutes of free driving.

Once registered, car2go members can locate available cars through the car2go London website or by using the smartphone app. Cars will also be available at select Europcar stores throughout the city.

car2go allows customers to leave their vehicle in any available parking spot and does not require customers to return their vehicle to the same spot they picked it up from.

This could be a very useful scheme but surely needs to be targeted. We had a vehicle parked outside from the start of the scheme which did not move. I then saw another vehicle arrive and managed to speak to the driver to see what was going on. He told me that he had to bring a new vehicle and take the old one to a new location where he would exchange it for a vehicle already parked there. He said this was to charge the batteries. This is hardly an environemtally friendly or cost effective way to run a business. Surely these would be better placed in areas where there are a high number of residents signed up to the scheme raher than where I am with most households having at least 2 cars.

Uber and Lyft drivers make far less when factoring vehicle expenses, though the actual numbers are now in dispute. A proper lifecycle cost analysis would’ve helped, and shows the benefit of collaboration with fleet professionals.

What a Connected Fleet Means to Avis (and Car Rental)

Counter bypass is just the beginning. The promise of a “data-driven ecosystem” that connects renters with the rental agency, retail services, and even the city is a better managed fleet, an improved user experience, and new revenue opportunities during the rental itself.
