Forced to close on June 15, nonprofit Buffalo CarShare has reopened by being tentatively acquired by Zipcar, according to a report by The Buffalo News.
Jennifer White, Buffalo CarShare’s former director of communications, told The Buffalo News that Zipcar could have vehicles back on the road for Buffalo, N.Y., residents and students by October.
Zipcar already has five carsharing vehicles at the University of Buffalo, says the report.
“Buffalo CarShare has proved this model of transportation works, can be profitable and can provide social equity,” White told The Buffalo News. “It’s really exciting that, although we couldn’t continue as a nonprofit, we are excited that a carsharing service will be maintained in Buffalo.”
Buffalo CarShare had to close after the only insurance company in New York state, serving independently operated carsharing organizations, wouldn’t renew its insurance, according to the report.
