WICHITA, Kan. --The Wichita City Council is considering either a 2.5% rental car tax increase or a $1.10 daily rental surcharge to set up additional funding for 27 nonprofit arts organizations, the Wichita Eagle reported.

The increase would be the second for the city’s car rental industry in five years. The latest proposal, if approved, is expected to bring in about $750,000 a year.

According to the newspaper report, however, representatives for the Greater Wichita Convention and Visitors Bureau pointed out that the city council backed down from a similar plan several years ago due to opposition from local rental companies.

Earlier this year, the council set aside $719,000 from next year’s budget for arts funding.

The tax ordinance, slated for a vote later this month, needs approval of five of the seven council members to pass.

The current tax is 10.8%.
