A newly approved rental car tax will go toward the construction of a new terminal at the Monroe Regional Airport in Louisiana, reports thenewsstar.com.

The Monroe City Council approved an ordinance implementing a $3 charge for every rental car transaction at the airport.

The charge could generate roughly $3 million to help repay bonds for the project, which would double the size of the airport from 30,000 square feet to about 60,000.

Airport Manager Cleve Norrell was unable to disclose to the council how many rental car transactions occur annually, but he said other Louisiana cities have adopted similar charges to pay for airport extensions. He said the charge could take effect as early as June.
