HEBRON, Ky. --- Rental companies at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport could be pinning a $3.75 daily surcharge to the cost of renting a car if the airport moves forward with a payment plan for a consolidated facility at the Hebron complex, the Kentucky Post reported.

The three-phase project is expected to cost $60 million. There is currently a 6 percent state sales tax and a 3 percent usage fee that goes to Northern Kentucky tri-ED, the nonprofit economic development corporation for the region.

In addition, car companies pay back to the Tri-ED a 9 to 11 percent assessment on the car-rental price for general infrastructural maintenance related to the business, according to the newspaper report.

Dale Huber, airport deputy director of aviation, told the Post that the airport collected $5.8 million for the general fund between September 2004 and August 2005.

According to the report, airport officials plan on recommending the additional charge to the Kenton County Airport Board at an Oct. 17 meeting.

The first phase of the project, which would house the airport’s seven rental companies, is slated to break ground in 2007.
