Las Vegas Airport Charging for Construction Setbacks

McCarran is demanding that its construction firm pay for the late opening of the consolidated rent-a-car facility.

After a 14-month construction delay, McCarran Airport finally opened its new rent-a-car facility and is preparing to charge PCL Construction Services for the holdup, states the Las Vegas Business Press.

PCL initially promised the 68-acre complex would be ready to open by February 23, 2006. Nasty weather pushed the date back to November 1, according to Airport Director Randy Walker. An unidentified project official said scheduling, pricing, and manpower problems caused further delay.

PCL’s contract specifies damages of $10,000 per day for a late opening. McCarran is currently holding close-door talks with PCL representatives. The Denver-based firm could face over $3.9 million in penalties, according to the report.

The new facility houses eleven rental companies, including Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise and Hertz. It also contains a three-story customer service building, a 5,000-space parking garage and 125 gasoline pumps, leading some project officials to call it “largest gas station west of the Mississippi.”

McCarran hopes to use the newly freed space in the airport to construct a new terminal. They have already begun converting former rental counters into baggage carousels.
