Rental Surcharge Plan Advanced for Midway
The Chicago City Council Aviation Committee advanced a plan to add a $3.75 daily surcharge on rental cars at Midway Airport to help pay for a consolidated facility.
CHICAGO -- As Midway Airport in Chicago moves toward finalizing its $70 million consolidated rental facility, the City Council’s Aviation Committee advanced a plan to add a $3.75 daily surcharge to car rental costs to pay for the project, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
The surcharge, which is similar in design to airline ticket taxes, is expected to bring in $5 million a year. The charge would be uniformly applied to each rental transaction, but officials say that could be adjusted in the future.
Midway's five-level, 2,100-space facility would move the airport's eight rental companies from a phone bank in lower-level baggage claim.
Currently, the rental companies have access to just 375 spaces in the main garage to accommodate travelers who rent for a combined 146,000 days each month, according to the report.
O'Hare, where there is also a need for a consolidated facility, could see a similar surcharge in the future, but for now it will only be applied at Midway.
