More Work Needed on Repair Data Sharing Commitment

The ACRA-supported American Alliance for Vehicle Owners Rights (AAVOR) views this new commitment as an important update to the 2014 "right to repair" agreement but leaves out safety and public policy goals.

The American Alliance for Vehicle Owners Rights (AAVOR) on July 21 acknowledged the announcement of the “Automotive Repair Data Sharing Commitment” from the Automotive Service Association and the Alliance for Automotive Innovation.

AAVOR, which is supported by the American Car Rental Association, recognizes the commitment document is an important update to the 2014 “right to repair” agreement, but notes that the commitment does not address many safety and public policy goals advocated by fleets, consumer advocates, insurance companies, automotive recyclers, and telematics service providers with respect to owner access to motor vehicle data.

“While the commitment represents incremental progress addressing the issue of vehicle data access, it also demonstrates that much work still needs to be done,” said Greg Scott of AAVOR. “It is AAVOR’s position that vehicle owners own and control the data being generated by their vehicle and need not pay anyone for access to that data.”

AAVOR continues to advocate for Congress to establish a federal framework that secures the right of vehicle owners to access and control the data their vehicles generate. The commitment document demonstrates the importance of vehicle data access as a public policy matter and AAVOR believes it creates an opportunity for Congress to act.

AAVOR anticipates, and remains committed to, working with the Congressional Vehicle Data Access Caucus, chaired by Reps. Buddy Carter (R-GA) and Darren Soto (D-FL), and others in Congress to craft comprehensive federal vehicle data access legislation.
