Through its Maven carsharing unit, General Motors is reportedly set to pilot a program allowing GM owners to rent out their vehicles when they aren’t in use, sources close to the matter told Bloomberg.
The program, which is slated to start in early summer, will allow GM vehicle owners to rent out their vehicles on Maven’s platform. Owners will then share the revenue with the automaker.
The sources, who remained anonymous as the plans haven’t been publically announced, said that the move is another step forward in GM’s transition from auto manufacturer to mobility provider.
Currently, GM’s Maven allows short-term rentals for drivers through it app, much like Zipcar. Maven Gig also rents out vehicles to those driving for gig purposes, such as Uber, Lyft, and Postmates.
The vehicles rented out under Maven and Maven Gig are fully owned and maintained by GM. This new model, dubbed “Airbnb for your Car” by Bloomberg, would increase the size of GM’s carsharing fleet, without the additional operational costs.
