While rental car companies in Hawaii are being allowed to reopen operations, a new proclamation from Gov. David Ige prohibits rental agncies from renting to individuals who are supposed to be in 14-day quarantine.
Under the new proclamation, all in-bound Hawaiian travelers are required to self-quarantine for 14 days. If someone is discovered to have rented a car while they were supposed to be quarantined, the rental agency will recieve a citation.
In order to comply with the mandate, rental agencies are adopting stricter policies.
According to KHON2, Hawaii Smart Car Rental is requiring visitors to provide a copy of their plane ticket and signed self-quarantine documentation. Joe Webster, owner of Big Island Jeep Rental, told the news outlet that policies need to be implemented to ensure travelers are not renting vehicles before their quarantine date has ended.
“You shouldn’t be aiding and abetting any criminal behavior especially if it’s going to cause damage to the well-being of our island,” he told the publication.
