At the Canton City Council's regular meeting on Nov. 15, the council voted down a proposed 3% excise tax on car rental companies operating in Canton, Ga.

The council voted the tax down in a 5-1 vote after a motion was made by councilman Bill Bryan that said: "It is hereby stated that the Canton Georgia City Council affirms the great American principle of limited government intrusion and unnecessary taxation into the lives and business of our citizens, and in support of this principle the City of Canton rejects the proposed rental car tax."

The tax aimed at helping small businesses looking to open in the Canton downtown area by funding a rental assistance program.

In attendance at the meeting in opposition to the tax was Angie Wiggins, manager at the local Enterprise Rent-A-Car, and David Schilling, a Canton resident, according to the meeting minutes. The city's mayor was in favor of the proposed tax.
