Canton City Leaders Debate Tax for Rental Car Companies
The potential tax on three of Georgia’s rental car companies will be discussed in May.
The Canton City Council decided to postpone determining a new proposal that would impose a 3% excise tax onto rental car companies in a 5-0 vote during their meeting on April 5.
Canton’s three rental car companies — Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Canton Auto Exchange & Rent-A-Car and Toyota Rental-Cherokee County Scion — would be affected by the 3% tax in order to raise funds for the Canton Main Street Program’s Business Development Rental Assistance Program, which would provide rental subsidies to assist small businesses in their first operating year in the downtown area.
However, since the Main Street Board was working on another plan on how to use the money to present to the council, Councilman Glen Cummins requested that the issue be delayed. Councilman John Beresford seconded his motion.
The matter will be discussed again during the council’s meeting in May.
