Car Rental Employee Charged in Vehicle Thefts
An 18-year-old rental company employee confesses after several Enterprise rentals from the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport turn up near his home.
Officials at Enterprise Rent-A-Car at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport noticed last week that a red Chrysler 300 was not parked in its assigned spot after an employee washed and refueled it. When they checked further, more cars were found missing, reported the Pioneer Press.
The Enterprise employee, 18-year-old Shawn Michael Hafemann, was recently charged in Ramsey County District Court with five counts of receiving stolen property, a felony. The complaint stated that Hafemann started working for the car rental agency last month.
On Nov. 22, supervisor Tom Eggerud noticed the Chrysler missing after a customer returned it. It reappeared the next day shortly before Hafemann clocked in for work.
Enterprise kept looking and discovered more rental vehicles were missing. Upon further investigation, officials found the cars parked near Hafemann’s home, and also found Hafemann in the driver’s seat of one of the missing cars.
The employee admitted to stealing and parking a few of the vehicles in spaces near the car wash at the rental agency and keeping the keys. He would punch out from work and take off in a rental car, he told police, according to the Pioneer Press.
