Chicago Airport Car Renters May Face New Fee
The $6 to $8 fee increase would go toward funding a consolidated rental car center at O-Hare International Airport. The fee, which could be imposed in the next two months, would be in addition to a $2.75 flat fee and an 8 percent tax already accessed on O'Hare vehicle rentals.
Car renters may soon pay the first new fee to fund expansion at O'Hare International Airport, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Chicago Mayor Richard Daley on May 12 asked to add an extra $6 to $8 to O'Hare rental costs to pay for a consolidated rental-car center, which would accommodate two new runways being built as part of a plan to modernize the airport.
The new fee would be in addition to a $2.75 flat fee accessed on O'Hare vehicle rentals and an 8 percent tax.
The fee could be imposed within the next two months. Jonathan Leach, general counsel for the Chicago Department of Aviation said the fee was consistent with what other airports around the country, which are also implementing consolidated rental-car facilities, are charging.
Car rental is not the only industry targeted for a fee increase. Daley administration officials also are lobbying Congress to raise the ticket tax charged to passengers for each leg of a flight.
