In an effort to help alleviate traffic congestion in Chicago, Alderman Brendan Reilly proposed on Friday a ride-hailing cap and congestion fee for Uber, Lyft, and Via vehicles, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Currently, the city charges a 72-cent fee on all ride-hailing rides. Earlier this year, the Metropolitan Planning Council and seven other transportation groups sent a letter to Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot regarding the fee. They argued that it is not high enough to "support the goals of equity and reducing congestion and green-house emissions.”

Reilly's call for a ride-hailing cap and congestion fee is modeled after a similar policy in New York City, which went into permanent effect in August. He argues that most people using ride-hailing services are tourists, and that the fee won't be passed on to residents.
