Counties Get Back Part of Rental Car Fee After Rail Project Eliminated
A $2 rental car fee was collected in Racine, Kenosha, and Milwaukee counties from about June 2006 to June 2009.
As part of the elimination of the proposed Kenosha-Racine-Milwaukee commuter rail, Racine County in Wisconsin will receive about $300,000 that was collected in rental car fees for the project, according to the Journal Times.
The state legislature recently eliminated the transit authority as part of the state budget.
The money will be issued to the county sometime around September and will now be used to offset any property tax increases next year.
As part of the preparation for the project, a $2 rental car fee was collected in Racine, Kenosha, and Milwaukee counties from about June 2006 to June 2009.
About $2.6 million was generated, but after expenses, $1.2 million remains. Racine and Kenosha counties will both receive about $300,000 and Milwaukee County will receive about $600,000.
