In two separate actions, Ford Motor Co. is recalling 2013-2014 model-year Escapes and C-Max hybrids in North America to address problems related to air bags and door handles.

In one action, Ford is recalling 692,487 2013-2014 model-year Escape SUV crossovers and C-Max hybrids to fix a potential software glitch. This issue might delay deployment of some air bags during a rollover crash. Of these recalled vehicles, about 591,000 were sold in the U.S. About 78,000 are in Canada and about 19,500 are in Mexico. To remedy this problem, dealers will reprogram the restraint control module.

In a separate action, Ford is also recalling 692,744 2013-2014-MY Escapes that may have faulty door handles. These handles might prevent the doors from latching properly, posing a safety risk when the car is in motion. Dealers will inspect the door handles and reposition them if necessary. About 580,000 of these Escapes are in the U.S. More than 89,500 are in Canada, and nearly 20,000 are in Mexico.

The majority of the recalled Escapes are at risk for both problems – the air bag software glitch and the faulty door handle.

Vehicle owners can reach Ford at 1-800-392-3673.
