Getaround, a peer-to-peer carsharing platform, has announced its expansion into the greater Boston area.

Now car owners in Boston can participate in the sharing economy by renting out their cars to people nearby. Those without cars can rent cars by the hour using the Getaround website, iOS, or Android apps.

"We are thrilled to launch in Boston, an early adopter of carsharing, and one that is dense with people, cars, and a good transportation system," said Jessica Scorpio, Getaround’s founder and chief marketing officer. "Good transportation systems often times lead to people leaving their cars unused, which through Getaround can provide car-free residents with an innovative transportation option taking cars off the road, reducing pollution and traffic, and helping the car owner earn extra income. It's a win-win for everyone."

Getaround’s technology combines GPS, Bluetooth LE, and keyless remote technology, allowing renters to unlock the car from their mobile phones.

"Boston is a hub for innovation, and I'm pleased to welcome Getaround's unique services to Boston's growing list of startups," said John Barros, Boston’s chief of economic development.

Within two months of Getaround’s soft launch in March, there are already about 50 cars live and available to rent in the greater Boston area.

Launched in 2011, Getaround is also available to owners and renters in San Francisco, Portland, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and the Tri-State New Jersey and New York areas.
